October has always been synonymous with mystery and intrigue, making it the perfect month for gothic books. This year, my reading pace slowed significantly due to life's demands. I only managed to read one book again this year: One Dark Window by Rachel Gilling. Trust me, the read was worth every moment, and I'm excited to share my thoughts!
My rating ✨✨✨✨ 4.0
Goodreads rating: ✨✨✨✨ 4.7

I was engrossed by Gilling's dark world. The beginning was somewhat challenging due to the large number of characters.
I often found myself confused by names that blurred gender lines - some names that seemed masculine were actually for female characters.
This initial confusion was disorienting, but overcoming this obstacle revealed the story's complicated design, particularly concerning the cards and the magic they held.
The tension between the main characters was intense. Although I hoped for more romantic moments, the slow build created by Gilling made those moments even more meaningful. For instance, in a crucial scene in chapter six, the characters shared a glance that suggested deeper feelings, heightening my anticipation for what would happen.

One of the standout aspects of One Dark Window was its unexpected plot twists. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, Gilling introduced a jaw-dropping turn of events. The revelation on page 252 left me astounded and added significant depth to the narrative. It was a moment that demonstrated Gilling's skill at keeping readers on their toes.
The darker themes throughout the book were also captivating. The character of the nightmare particularly drew me in, and I am eager to see how this character evolves in the sequel. Gilling's ability to weave gothic elements into a compelling story is remarkable and keeps you invested from start to finish.
Reflecting on my October reading, I feel surprisingly satisfied despite the limited quantity. One Dark Window offered a fascinating escape filled with magic, tension, and twists that I didn't see coming.

For fans of dark romantasy seeking more experiences similar to this one, I highly recommend Moonlit Awakening. It embodies the same enchanting darkness as One Dark Window, promising a captivating journey of its own.
To wrap up, my October reading may not have been extensive, but it certainly was rewarding. One Dark Window by Rachel Gilling stands out as being a gothic romance rather than dark romantasy. If you're in the mood for a gothic tale combining magic, tension, and unforgettable twists, this book deserves a prominent spot on your reading list.
Happy reading!
